Selecting a Wooden Dining Table: Shape, Size, and Finish

Choosing a wooden dining table for your Indian home means balancing function, style and longevity. It's the piece around which family life unfolds — meals, conversations, celebrations and quiet mornings. Getting it right is worth the care.

Shape

Rectangular tables maximise seats in longer spaces and suit most Indian dining rooms. Round or square tables fit better in compact or square rooms and encourage more intimate conversation. An extendable table offers flexibility for entertaining without taking up permanent space.

Size

For a family of four, a standard table size is approximately 120–150cm in length. For six to eight seats, opt for 180–240cm. Always leave at least 90cm around the table for comfortable movement and chair pull-out.

Wood and Finish

Indian woods like sheesham, teak and mango are preferred for their durability and beautiful grain. For a Japandi or Scandinavian-inspired dining room, Canadian pinewood in a natural matte finish offers a pale, warm tone that is both contemporary and timeless.

Matte finishes hide scratches and age gracefully. Gloss finishes show marks more easily but are easier to wipe clean. Dark stains like walnut are timeless; lighter finishes suit airy, modern settings.

Craftsmanship

Quality joinery — no visible nails, even seams, solid mortise-and-tenon or dowel joints — signals durable craftsmanship. A well-made dining table should last for decades and improve with age.
