What Desilvering Is and Why It Happens
The black spots that appear at the edges and corners of mirrors over time are called desilvering. They are caused by moisture penetrating the backing of the mirror and oxidising the silver or aluminium layer that creates the reflection. Once desilvering begins, it cannot be reversed. The spots grow slowly but consistently, moving inward from the edges until the mirror is no longer usable.
Desilvering is accelerated by humidity, which makes Indian homes — particularly in coastal cities and during monsoon — one of the most demanding environments for mirror longevity in the world. A mirror with a poorly sealed backing and a frame that does not protect the edges will begin desilvering within two to three years in high-humidity conditions. By year two, UV exposure has begun to yellow the plastic, particularly on any surface that receives direct or indirect sunlight. By year three, the yellowing is pronounced and the plastic has become slightly brittle, which means it chips rather than denting when impacted.
The structural rigidity of a plastic frame also degrades over time. MDF absorbs moisture and swells. The swelling is not uniform — it is most pronounced at the corners and edges where the frame pieces join, and at any point where the finish has been compromised. Pinewood absorbs and releases moisture as a single continuous piece, which means it moves uniformly rather than swelling unevenly. The corner joints, if properly made, accommodate this movement without opening. The matte oil finish allows the wood to breathe rather than trapping moisture inside, which prevents the internal stress that causes cracking and warping.
