The Bolt-Together Frame: What Three Years Did to the Joints

Re-tightening the bolts after disassembly produced a frame that felt rigid again. But the bolt holes had already compressed, which meant the re-tightened bolts were gripping compressed wood rather than fresh wood. The next compression cycle would happen faster than the first.
The Screwless Joinery Frame: What Three Years Did to the Joints

The mortise-and-tenon joints, when disassembled, showed no compression marks, no micro-movement evidence and no change in the fit of the tenon in the mortise. If anything, the joint was slightly tighter than it had been when new — the wood had settled into the joint over three years of use and the fit had improved rather than degraded.

The Practical Implication
A bolt-together bed frame has a built-in failure mechanism. The bolt holes compress over time, the joints loosen and the frame develops wobble that cannot be permanently resolved by re-tightening. The timeline depends on the material — solid wood compresses more slowly than MDF — but the direction is always the same.
A screwless joinery bed frame does not have this failure mechanism. The joints are held by the geometry of the wood rather than by a bolt through a hole, which means there is nothing to compress and nothing to loosen. The frame gets tighter with use rather than looser.
