Checking a console table for solid wood versus MDF, A Good Life

How to Tell If a Console Table Is Solid Wood, Not MDF With Veneer

A console's open shelving design, unlike a closed cabinet, actually makes verification easier, most of the structure is visible without needing to open a single door.

Check the Shelf Edges Directly

Every shelf edge on a piece like the Nagomi Console is fully visible, run a finger along one, solid wood feels seamless around the edge, MDF with veneer often shows a faint seam or slightly different texture where the thin wood layer wraps the edge.

Look Underneath the Top Surface

The underside of the top shelf is rarely finished for display, making it one of the most honest places to check. Solid wood shows natural, unfinished grain, MDF shows a flat, fibrous, uniform surface with no wood grain at all.

Check Where Legs Meet the Frame

Solid wood joinery at the leg-to-frame connection shows continuous material, sometimes visible interlocking cuts. MDF construction typically relies on visible metal brackets or dowels at this same connection point instead.

The Honest Verdict

An open console's design works in your favour here, check the shelf edges, the underside, and the leg joints directly, all fully visible without any disassembly required, unlike furniture with closed storage hiding its construction.
